Is Up the greatest movie ever made?
The answer is yes. Absolutely yes. That’s how you feel while watching this thing.
Completely under the spell - a feeling not experienced nearly enough in adulthood. The first twenty minutes are throbbing with vivid, intense, powerful nostalgia - that word that comes from nostos (return home) and algos (pain or longing). Even before it gets to the point where the tissues come out, you can feel your eyes well with some sort of complicated happiness.
And then we get a balloon adventure. Over the Amazon Forest. With dogs that can voice their thoughts through robotic collars. Come on! How awesome can this movie get?
I’m gonna keep this short for now - I’ll probably end up writing a ton about this movie over the next year or so - but I just want to say that everything is in its perfect place here. This is truly “storytelling at its best”, “the reason movies were made”.
Beautiful, exciting, filled with lovely characters. And crazy funny.
