The Hangover is very funny (if you are me)

    this makes me laugh

I think it’s easier writing about movies I have problems with.  Or movies I know I’m going to have to argue for or against.  I like this movie.  I don’t have problems with it.  It appears that most everyone agrees.

The Hangover is a funny movie from top to bottom.  It’s takes a bit of time to warm up in the beginning, but that’s fine.  It also cools down a bit before it ends, and that’s fine, too.  Because we like spending time with these characters.  We like anticipating the trouble they are going to get into.  We really like the trouble they get in.  And it’s a-okay to see them in a normal situation at the end of all the trouble.

The only thing I’ve heard against the movie is how it’s either racist, homophobic, or egregiously offensive in other ways.  Well, that’s obviously tricky stuff.  Some have said that it has actually set us (human beings) back in those departments (racism, homophobia, etc.) - particularly because it’s so popular (even among critics).  The NY Times review probably approaches this in the best way.

For my part - I’ll say that it made me laugh.  A lot.  Even some of the stuff that is clearly in question I laughed at.  Especially the baby masturbating.  It’s not a perfect movie.  By far.  It’s not even excellent really.  But it is very funny.  And therefore very good.  If you like this sort of thing.

Comedy is difficult stuff, ladies and gentlemen.  You cannot make everyone laugh.  It is impossible.  Offensive material, specifically, is difficult.  It can be gold if it is funny.  If it is not funny, it is simply offensive.  And…you cannot make everyone laugh.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite sayings: Comedy (or Horror - take your pick) is like Porn: what does it for you, might not do it for me.
