It’s Monday, which means list time. However, I’m breaking a few rules. First, this list contains just five items instead of 11. Why? Maybe it’s my own mini protest against the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to include 10 nominees in the Best Picture category at this year’s Academy Awards. This new [...]
We here at the Devil’s Avocado like our lists to come out on Mondays (or the Tuesday after a national holiday-Hey, I got BBQs to attend and war movies to watch), and like Spinal Tap’s amps, our lists go to eleven.
Now that school’s out, I’ve gotten my bike out of storage, and I’ve attended both [...]

So, this list may be a bit less “fists swinging” than my last one, but I’m in a nostalgic mood. When Spielberg and Scorsesewere kids, they adored the movies of [...]

A Response to “Gran Torino is a masterpiece, the feel-good comedy of the year“
I don’t want to argue semantics (ok. that’s a lie, I do), but there is little else in the article with which I can find any disagreements. Gran Torino is a fine film. It’s a great movie, even. I’ll even go so [...]
At the very least, I feel comfortable saying that - Gran Torino is a masterpiece. I know it. And, yeah, right now I think it might be my favorite movie of 2008. “Favorite”, not “best”. Not necessarily. But maybe it is. Who knows. It sort of doesn’t matter to me.
I’d been thinking lately that 2008 [...]
